A well-placed thyroidectomy scar fades to a fine line — but careful aftercare makes the difference. Here are evidence-based tips.
Where is the scar?
In a natural skin crease at the base of the neck. The incision length varies from 3–6 cm depending on gland size.
First two weeks
Keep the wound clean and dry. Steristrips are usually left in place. Avoid hot showers, perfumes and creams over the area.
Weeks 2–6
Begin gentle silicone-gel application twice daily once the wound has fully sealed. Avoid direct sun for at least 6 months — use SPF 50 once epithelialised.
Massage
From week 3, gentle circular massage with silicone gel for 1–2 minutes twice daily helps soften the scar.
When to seek help
Increasing redness, raised hypertrophic appearance, persistent itching, or wound separation.
