Breast complaints — a lump, pain, nipple discharge or an abnormal scan — are among the most common reasons women in Dubai seek a surgical opinion. For cultural, religious and personal reasons, a large proportion of women in the UAE prefer to be examined and treated by a female surgeon. This guide explains what a female general/breast surgeon does, what credentials matter, and how to make sure your consultation feels safe, discreet and clinically excellent.
What does a female breast surgeon actually do
A General Surgeon with a special interest in breast disease evaluates and treats benign and selected oncological breast conditions: lumps, cysts, fibroadenomas, mastalgia, nipple discharge, breast abscess, gynaecomastia, lipomas of the chest wall, and post-biopsy follow-up. We also coordinate care with radiology and oncology when needed.
What we do not do (without an MDT): primary breast cancer reconstruction or chemotherapy. For confirmed cancer, you are referred into a multidisciplinary team where a female lead surgeon can still be your primary point of contact.
Why women in Dubai prefer a female surgeon
- •Cultural and religious comfort during examination
- •Easier disclosure of intimate symptoms (nipple discharge, breastfeeding pain, body image)
- •Modesty during ultrasound and biopsy procedures
- •A female chaperone is automatic
- •A felt sense of empathy around fertility, pregnancy and breastfeeding concerns
Credentials that genuinely matter
- •MBBS + MS (General Surgery) — core surgical training
- •FIAGES — Fellowship of Indian Association of GI Endo Surgeons (laparoscopic competence)
- •MRCS (UK) — Member of the Royal College of Surgeons
- •DHA licence — Dubai Health Authority registration (mandatory)
- •Hospital privileges — operating rights at a JCI-accredited hospital
- •Continuing breast-disease CME and audited outcomes
What to expect at the first consultation
1. Detailed history — symptoms, family history, hormones, medications, prior scans. 2. Examination — chaperoned, private cubicle, drape-respectful. 3. Targeted imaging — ultrasound (under 40), mammogram + ultrasound (40+), MRI in selected cases. 4. Biopsy if indicated — core needle under ultrasound, local anaesthetic, results in 3–5 days. 5. Clear written plan and a direct WhatsApp line for questions.
Questions to ask a female breast surgeon
- •How many breast consultations and biopsies do you do per month?
- •Will you personally perform my surgery or supervise it?
- •What is your complication and re-excision rate?
- •Will I see you for follow-up, or a different doctor?
- •Do you work with a female radiologist for my ultrasound?
- •Is my insurance covered, and what is the out-of-pocket estimate?
