Early detection saves lives. In Dubai, breast screening is widely available, comfortable and often covered by insurance. This guide explains when to start, which test fits which age, and how to book a screening appointment with a female surgeon.
Why screening matters
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the UAE — and the average age of diagnosis is about a decade younger than in Europe. Screening catches cancer when it is small, often before any lump can be felt, when treatment is shortest and most successful.
When to start — by age
Under 30: routine screening is not recommended unless there are symptoms or strong family history. Clinical breast exam every 1–3 years.
30–39: annual clinical breast exam. Ultrasound for any new lump.
40–49: annual mammogram (or biennial, depending on risk). Many radiologists in Dubai add ultrasound for dense breasts.
50–74: mammogram every 1–2 years.
75+: continue if life expectancy is over 10 years.
The screening tests explained
Mammogram: low-dose X-ray, 15 minutes, mild compression. Best for detecting microcalcifications and small cancers in older breasts.
Ultrasound: painless, no radiation, 10 minutes. Best for dense breasts and characterising lumps.
MRI: only for very high-risk women. Painless but requires lying still for 30 minutes and an injection of contrast.
If you are higher risk
Talk to a surgeon if you have:
- •A first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) with breast cancer under 50
- •Known BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation
- •Previous chest radiation
- •Previous high-risk biopsy result You may need to start screening 10 years earlier than the affected relative — and may need MRI in addition to mammogram.
What to expect at your appointment
Most Medcare clinics offer same-day screening: 15-minute mammogram, 10-minute ultrasound, results usually within 24–48 hours. A female radiographer is standard. A female surgeon is available the same day if any abnormality is found.
Cost & insurance
Most comprehensive UAE health plans cover annual breast screening from age 40 — and sometimes earlier with a referral — once pre-authorisation is in place. For a personalised plan and to confirm exactly what your insurance covers, please book a consultation with Dr. Vanesha Varik.
