Robotic surgery is an evolution of laparoscopy — not a replacement. Here is what matters to patients.
What is robotic surgery?
The surgeon operates robotic instruments through a console; the patient is on the table under standard general anaesthesia.
Advantages
Three-dimensional vision, wristed instruments, tremor filtration — particularly useful in deep, narrow pelvises and for fine reconstructive work.
Limitations
Higher cost, longer set-up, limited tactile feedback and not available at every hospital.
When robotic helps
Complex pelvic procedures, advanced hernia repair, selected oncological cases.
When laparoscopy is equal or better
Most routine general surgery — gallbladder, appendix, standard hernia.
