Laparoscopic surgery requires general anaesthesia. Here is what happens — and why it is safe in modern hospitals.
Pre-anaesthetic assessment
History, examination, blood tests, ECG. Allergies, current medication, prior anaesthesia experience and family history are reviewed.
On the day
Fasting from midnight. IV access, monitoring, induction with a quick-acting agent, intubation, maintenance with inhaled or IV agent.
During surgery
Continuous vital sign monitoring, controlled ventilation, careful temperature management, multimodal analgesia.
Recovery
Wake-up in theatre recovery area. Most patients are alert within 30 minutes. Anti-nausea and pain medication given as needed.
Safety
Serious complications are rare in fit adults; the team is fully equipped to manage any issue.
