Laparoscopic appendectomy is the standard treatment for appendicitis. Here is what patients can expect.
When is it needed
Acute appendicitis confirmed clinically and on imaging. Delay risks perforation and peritonitis.
The procedure
Three small ports, identification and division of the appendix, removal through a port and washout. Takes 30–60 minutes.
Recovery
Hospital stay typically 24–48 hours. Return to desk work within 7–10 days; heavy work and sport after 4 weeks.
Risks
Bleeding, infection, ileus, stump leak — all uncommon. Conversion to open is rare.
Alternative
Selected mild cases may be trialled with antibiotics; relapse is common.
