Gallbladder surgery is one of the most frequently insured operations in the UAE. This guide explains, in general terms, what is usually covered, what to verify with your plan, and how Dr. Vanesha Varik's team handles pre-authorisation.
Is gallbladder surgery covered in the UAE?
Most comprehensive UAE health plans cover medically indicated cholecystectomy once pre-authorisation is in place. The exact extent of cover varies between plans, so a quick verification with your insurer is always recommended.
What 'medically indicated' means
Insurance covers surgery when documented by: symptomatic gallstones on ultrasound, acute cholecystitis, biliary pancreatitis, bile duct stones, or gallbladder polyps over 1 cm. The surgeon's clinical note and ultrasound report are the key documents.
What is typically excluded
- •Cosmetic upgrade to single-incision (SILS) cholecystectomy may not be covered
- •Premium room upgrades above plan limit
- •Treatment of unrelated medical conditions
- •Out-of-network hospitals (check your plan)
How pre-authorisation works
After consultation Dr. Varik prepares a clinical note with diagnosis, ultrasound findings and proposed procedure. The hospital insurance desk submits this to your insurer, typically receiving approval within 1–2 working days. You will be informed of any co-pay before surgery.
Self-pay patients
If you are uninsured or prefer to self-pay, a transparent written estimate is shared after consultation. To begin, please book a consultation with Dr. Vanesha Varik.
