Gallstones (cholelithiasis) are one of the most common surgical conditions in the UAE — affecting women more often than men. This guide explains when gallstones need treatment, the surgical options, recovery and long-term life without a gallbladder.
What are gallstones?
Gallstones are hardened deposits of cholesterol or bile pigment that form in the gallbladder. They range from sand-like sludge to large solitary stones. Risk factors include female gender, age over 40, pregnancy, obesity, rapid weight loss and family history.
How are gallstones diagnosed?
Abdominal ultrasound is the first-line test, with over 95% accuracy. Blood tests check liver function. MRCP or endoscopic ultrasound may be added if bile duct stones are suspected.
When does surgery become necessary?
Surgery is recommended when gallstones cause: biliary colic (right upper pain after meals), acute cholecystitis (gallbladder infection), pancreatitis, jaundice from bile duct stones, or recurrent symptoms. Silent gallstones in selected high-risk groups (diabetics, large stones, polyps) may also be removed prophylactically.
Surgical options in Dubai
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard — four small ports, 60–90 minute operation, day-care discharge in most cases. Single-incision (SILS) cholecystectomy is offered selectively for cosmetic priority. Open surgery is reserved for very complicated cases.
Non-surgical options
Oral bile acid therapy (ursodeoxycholic acid) and shockwave lithotripsy have very high failure and recurrence rates and are rarely used in adults today. Surgery is the definitive treatment.
Recovery and life after
Day-care discharge, desk work in 7–10 days, full activity at 2 weeks. Diet returns to normal within 1–2 weeks. The vast majority of patients live a completely normal life without their gallbladder.
Insurance coverage in the UAE
All major UAE insurers cover medically indicated cholecystectomy with pre-authorisation. A written estimate is shared at consultation.
