When imaging cannot explain persistent abdominal pain, diagnostic laparoscopy offers direct visual inspection of the abdomen.
Indications
Chronic unexplained pain, suspected adhesions, possible endometriosis affecting bowel, evaluation of pelvic pathology in collaboration with gynaecology.
The procedure
General anaesthesia, single or three small ports, structured inspection of all four quadrants, biopsy or treatment of lesions found.
Recovery
Same-day or next-day discharge. Return to desk work within 5–7 days.
What it finds
Adhesions, endometriosis, hernia, chronic appendicitis, mesenteric lesions, occult malignancy.
Limitations
Some causes of chronic pain are not visible — collaboration with gastroenterology and pain medicine is often valuable.
