Most patients are surprised at how quickly modern day-care gallbladder surgery allows them back to normal life. The right return-to-work date depends on your job — and the realistic answer can be very different from the leaflet 'two weeks off' advice.
Desk / office work
Most patients with sedentary jobs return within 5–7 days. Working from home for the first 2–3 days makes the transition easier. Keep getting up every 30 minutes to walk.
Customer-facing / retail
Light standing work is comfortable from 7–10 days. Avoid lifting stock or boxes for 3 weeks.
Driving (taxi, courier, sales)
7–10 days, once off opioid painkillers and able to perform an emergency stop without flinching. Insurance generally requires this confirmation.
Manual labour & construction
3–4 weeks for the abdominal wall to regain full lifting capacity. Avoid lifts > 15 kg before this.
Healthcare workers
Office/clinic-based: 7–10 days. Ward-based with patient handling: 3 weeks. Operating theatre staff: 2 weeks (no patient transfer/instrument trays before then).
Cabin crew & pilots
DHA/GCAA generally allow return after 2 weeks following uncomplicated laparoscopic surgery with surgeon sign-off.
