Pain Management After Surgery (Without Over-Reliance on Opioids)

Modern, multimodal pain control after surgery — effective and opioid-sparing.

Modern multimodal pain management gives excellent control with minimal opioid use.

Multimodal approach

Paracetamol, NSAID (if no contraindication), local anaesthetic infiltration during surgery, and short opioid courses only when needed.

Regular vs as-needed

Take paracetamol regularly for the first 48–72 hours; NSAIDs every 8 hours. Opioids only for breakthrough pain.

Non-pharmacological measures

Ice packs, position changes, gentle mobilisation, distraction.

Red flags

Pain worsening after day 3, swelling, redness or fever — contact us.

Stopping medication

Most patients are pain-free on simple analgesia within a week.
