Knowing what is normal at each stage of recovery is reassuring and helps you spot any red flag early. This day-by-day timeline applies to laparoscopic inguinal, umbilical and small ventral hernia repair.
Day 0 — Day of surgery
Surgery takes 45–90 minutes under general anaesthesia. You spend 2–4 hours in recovery, then discharge home with painkillers, anti-nausea medication and clear written instructions. Eat a light meal, walk to the bathroom unaided, sleep on your back.
Day 1
Soreness in the groin or around the belly button. Walk every 1–2 hours, drink plenty of fluids. Shower allowed (waterproof dressing). No driving, no lifting over 5 kg.
Day 2–3
Pain often peaks on day 2 then improves. Mild bruising is normal. Resume normal meals. Continue regular painkillers as prescribed. Short walks outside.
Day 4–7
Pain reduces significantly. Most patients return to desk work by day 7. Gentle stretching allowed. Remove dressings as directed.
Week 2
First post-op follow-up. Cleared to drive (if off strong painkillers). Light household activity, walking 30–45 minutes.
Week 3
Light gym (cardio, upper body) allowed. No core work or heavy lifting yet.
Week 4–6
Full return to manual work, sport, lifting and core exercise. Mesh is fully integrated into surrounding tissue.
