A decade ago, a hernia operation in Dubai meant 2–3 nights in hospital. Today, the majority of laparoscopic and open inguinal, umbilical and small ventral hernia repairs are routinely performed as day-care surgery — meaning you arrive in the morning and are discharged home the same evening. This shift has been made possible by advances in laparoscopic technique, modern short-acting anaesthesia, multimodal pain control and structured day-surgery pathways at JCI-accredited hospitals. Dr. Vanesha Varik performs day-care hernia surgery routinely at Medcare Hospital Al Safa, Dubai, with same-day discharge for the majority of suitable patients. This guide explains who qualifies for day-care repair, what your operative day will actually look like hour by hour, and how to recover safely at home in the first 48 hours.
What is day-care hernia surgery?
Day-care surgery — also called ambulatory or same-day surgery — means you are admitted, operated on and discharged within the same calendar day, without an overnight hospital stay. For uncomplicated laparoscopic and open hernia repairs in healthy adults, this is now the international standard of care.
The operation itself is identical to inpatient repair. The difference lies in the pre-operative selection, anaesthesia plan, pain protocol and discharge pathway — all designed to allow safe same-day discharge with structured follow-up.
Who is suitable for day-care hernia repair?
Most adult patients with primary inguinal, femoral, umbilical or small ventral hernias are candidates. Suitability is confirmed at consultation and again at pre-anaesthesia assessment.
Typical eligibility criteria include: ASA grade I or II (healthy or mild systemic disease), BMI under approximately 35, well-controlled diabetes / hypertension, no recent cardiac or respiratory event, ability to mobilise independently after surgery, and a responsible adult to escort you home and stay for the first 24 hours.
Patients who are usually NOT suitable for day-care: very large or recurrent hernias, hiatus hernia repair, severe sleep apnoea, uncontrolled cardiac disease, those living alone with no overnight support, and patients on complex anticoagulation that requires hospital monitoring.
Your day-care timeline — hour by hour
06:30 — Arrive fasted at Medcare Hospital Al Safa Day Surgery Unit 07:00 — Admission, change into gown, IV cannula, final consent and marking of hernia site 07:30 — Anaesthesia review, premedication if required 08:00–10:00 — Surgery (laparoscopic TEP/TAPP or open Lichtenstein, 45–90 minutes) 10:00–12:00 — Recovery room: monitoring, pain control, anti-nausea medication 12:00–15:00 — Day-care ward: oral fluids, light snack, mobilisation, urination check 15:00–17:00 — Discharge review by surgeon, written instructions, prescription, follow-up date 17:00–18:00 — Home with escort
Anaesthesia for day-care hernia repair
General anaesthesia using short-acting agents (propofol, sevoflurane, remifentanil) is standard for laparoscopic repair. For open inguinal repair, regional or local infiltration with sedation is an excellent alternative and allows the fastest discharge.
Multimodal analgesia — local anaesthetic infiltration of the wound, paracetamol and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory — controls pain so well that most patients only require oral medication at home.
What you can and cannot do in the first 48 hours
You CAN: walk gently around the house, climb stairs slowly, shower after 24 hours, eat normally, take prescribed painkillers as needed.
You should NOT: drive for 24 hours after general anaesthesia, sign legal documents, drink alcohol, lift anything heavier than 5 kg, or perform any strenuous activity.
A responsible adult must stay with you for the first 24 hours. You should have a phone, easy access to the bathroom and prescribed medications laid out before you leave hospital.
When to call the clinic after day-care discharge
Contact the clinic or attend the emergency department urgently if you experience: fever above 38.5°C, increasing pain not controlled by prescribed medication, inability to pass urine 8 hours after surgery, vomiting that prevents fluid intake, redness, swelling or discharge from the wound, or any sudden severe abdominal pain.
Routine post-operative reviews are scheduled at 1 week (wound check) and 4–6 weeks (long-term assessment). Dr. Vanesha Varik's WhatsApp line is available for urgent post-operative concerns.
