Diet After Abdominal Surgery: A Phased Plan

How to reintroduce food safely after abdominal surgery.

A phased return to normal diet after abdominal surgery improves recovery and reduces nausea.

First 24 hours

Sips of water, then clear fluids — broth, weak tea, dilute juice.

Day 2–3

Soft diet — soups, yoghurt, mashed potato, scrambled egg, well-cooked vegetables.

Day 3–7

Normal but light diet — small, frequent meals. Avoid heavy spice and very fatty foods.

Week 2 onwards

Return to normal diet. Maintain hydration and fibre to prevent constipation.

What to avoid

Excess caffeine, alcohol and carbonated drinks for the first week.
